Annie Beynon is another wonderful creation from the pen of Jan Baynham. I liked Annie immediately & rooted for her all the way. I cared about her & that, for me, matters hugely. It's an intriguing story - a bit out of left-field for a war-time romance & all the better for it in my view! The author's skill lies in her ability to write romance without ever falling into sentimentality. And she treats the 'secret' motif so well, with just the right amount of tension. Overall, this is a fascinating, well crafted book - & as I have come to expect from this author - it's extremely well researched too. Recommended.

Synopsis

How far would you go to save the person you loved the most?

It’s 1941, and Annie Beynon has just become the first stable girl for the most powerful family in her Welsh village. Whilst her gift for working with horses is clear, there are some who are willing to make her life very difficult on the Pryce estate, simply for being a girl.

There are other – secret – ways Annie is defying conventions, too. As the war rages, and when Edmund, the heir to the Pryce fortune, leaves to join the RAF, it seems that it’s only a matter of time before Annie’s secret is exposed. That is, until she makes a shocking decision.

It’s 1963 before Annie is able to face up to the secret she chose to keep over twenty years before. Justifying that decision takes her to Normandy in France, and an outcome she could never have expected...

Reviews

This is a real tear jerker romance. I loved it from the very start. The story is basically Annie's story for the 20 years running from the war to the 60s. A feisty girl who needs all her courage and determination to survive the trials her life brings her. It begins and ends with her relationship with her boss Edmund. I loved the way the author introduced the many strands that make up Annie's life and managed to tie them all up by the end of the book. Most unusually for me, I did shed a few tears along the way. So, find some chocolate and settle down to a great read.

I really enjoyed this book and it took me back to time spent in France and the landscapes I remember. Jan’s vivid description of place really draws me in. The story kept me wanting to know about all of the characters and I didn’t want it to end.

About the author

Jan Baynham

Fascinated by family secrets and ‘skeletons lurking in cupboards’, Jan’s dual narrative, dual timeline novels explore how decisions and actions made by family members from one generation impact on the lives of the next. Her first three novels look at the bond between mothers and daughters as well as forbidden love. Setting and a sense of place plays an important part in all Jan’s stories and as well as her native mid-Wales, there is always a contrasting location - Greece, Sicily and northern France. Her next books will involve secrets and sibling relationships; the first set in 1943 and 1968 takes the reader back to beautiful Sicily where two sisters work together to prove their father’s innocence of a wrongdoing.

Originally from mid-Wales, Jan lives in Cardiff with her husband.
